Overview

Being an intern for the Physiotherapy Program in Ghana, you'll get an opportunity to learn more about the holistic approach followed by the Western-classical therapists and help the local people recover through this practice. You'll be working at one of the physiotherapy centers in Accra. Interns can also take up counseling sessions on stress management, as well as the Asian practices like Shiatsu or Tai Chi.

Physiotherapy is still not popular enough in Ghana, however, there's an immense potential where you can impart this knowledge, relieving people from their pain. You can also train the locals to be experts so that this practice becomes a sustainable one. 


Program Requirements

Program Requirements

Interns must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the project. Participants should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Medical and Physiotherapy interns must provide a clean criminal background check report, CV, Passport Copy as well as other documents and credentials pertaining to their qualifications prior to joining the program. Medical,Nursing or midwifery students, Pre medical students and students studying physiotherapy or occupational therapy can take part in the program.

As an intern for this program, your main tasks would be depending on your previous knowledge and the needs of the patient.

  • Focus on muscle building and improving motor skills of the patients
  • Training for remobilization after nerve damage
  • Rehabilitation exercises after sports injuries
  • Carrying out massages and relaxation exercises with children

Intern Work Schedule

Intern Work Schedule

Interns will be working from Monday to Friday, between 8 AM to 5 PM. You can freely schedule your working hours (up to eight hours a day) and have one Lunchtime from 1 AM to 2 PM.The schedule is flexible and depends on the workload and requirements of your placement.

 

Living

Living

From your airport pickup, stay, meals, weekend tours and other nitty gritties, VolSol manages everything for you.

Arrival & Orientation

You will meet our representative at Kotoka International Airport in Accra from where you'll be transferred to the Volunteer house. Later, you'll travel to the project site after the orientation program.

Your project site will always be close to your accommodation. Every project office has different working hours (5-6 days a week), which will be discussed with you right at the beginning of your program.

Accommodation 

You'll get to live in the volunteer house along with your fellow mates while working at the program. There are a total of 6 bedrooms in the volunteer house along with 4 toilets, 3 bathrooms, and a fully-equipped communal kitchen. There is also a big living room with a satellite TV. There's a cook to take care of the meals. There's a spacious porch for the volunteers to chill during their free time. The volunteer house is very close to Coco Beach, so you can make quick trips there. 

In case you intern at the Volta Region, you’ll be living with a host family and learn about the Ghanaian life very closely. This would also give you an opportunity to get to understand the culture, their societal problems etc. The host family accommodations are safe and you’ll surely end up having a ‘home away from home’ experience.

Meals

Volunteers are provided with 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) at the accommodation. Ghanaian cuisine consists primarily of starches, soups, beans, meat, and fish. The Starches consist mainly of rice and doughy balls made from mashed cassava, plantain or yams.  Famous Ghanaian dishes include Banku and Fufu. Participants are given a mix of local and western meals.

During your Free Time

There is also a lot to discover around the Student House as it is close by of the beautiful Coco Beach, In addition, after work you can do a relaxed stroll in a shopping mall not far away. Experience the vibrant Ghanaian Capital Accra in all its facets. 

On the weekends you can do a variety of trips to places such as Cape Coast, Kumasi, Canopy Walk and many more options to choose from.
